Professional Emotional Support: You Are Not Alone
No parent is ever truly prepared for the words, “Your child has cancer.” It is one of the most overwhelming experiences a human can face—a moment where the world feels suddenly silent, and you feel completely adrift.
At CCO, our mission is to make that journey more bearable. We provide a safety net of professional psychosocial care designed to hold your family together when everything else feels like it’s falling apart.
The CCO Psychosocial Support Team
A diagnosis of cancer or a life-threatening blood disorder carries emotional weight that reaches far beyond the hospital room. Our dedicated team of Social Workers, Counsellors, and Social Auxiliary Workers are stationed directly within paediatric oncology units to walk alongside you.
Our professional intervention includes:
Navigating the Crisis: Helping families process the initial shock and access the internal and external resources needed to manage the road ahead.
Empowerment through Ownership: Guiding parents and children to take ownership of their situation, transforming fear into informed resilience.
Compassionate End-of-Life Care: In instances where treatment outcomes are not positive, our team facilitates palliative and end-of-life care, ensuring every moment is met with quality, dignity, and peace.
Bereavement Support: We remain a pillar of strength long after the battle, helping families navigate the complex landscape of grief and healing.
The Strength of the Young Warrior Network
While our professional team provides clinical guidance, we know that some comfort can only come from those who have stood exactly where you are standing.
Shared Strength from Survivors and Parents
The CCO Survivor’s Corner and our Parents Supporting Parents programme bridge the gap between clinical care and lived experience.
For Parents: Connect with "Veteran Parents" who have navigated the same fears and can offer the unique perspective of someone who has "been there."
For Young Warriors: Our community of survivors provides a living testament to strength, offering peer-to-peer connection for children and teens as they navigate life during and after treatment.
"Professional expertise treats the diagnosis; community support heals the heart."

Community & Peer Support: The Power of Connection
While medical and professional care are vital, the "heart" of healing often happens through shared experiences. CCO’s community-driven support programs provide a lifeline for families, offering a space where you don’t have to explain your pain because everyone around you already understands it.
Parents Supporting Parents & Survivor Groups
No one can guide you through this journey quite like someone who has walked it themselves. Our regional offices host monthly parent groups, creating a safe, light-hearted environment where families can find emotional relief.
Shared Wisdom: These gatherings allow parents to discuss crucial concerns and practical challenges in a supportive, relaxed setting.
The Comfort of Community: Whether it’s through our survivor groups or bereavement support, we ensure that no one faces the peaks and valleys of this journey alone.
Small Gestures, Big Impact
Sometimes, support looks like a warm cup of tea. Every week, our regional teams and dedicated volunteers serve tea and sandwiches to parents and children in the wards and outpatient clinics. It is a simple gesture designed to provide a moment of comfort and a reminder that you are cared for.

Childhood shouldn't have to pause for cancer. Because treatment can keep children out of the classroom for months or even years, many hospitals lack a formal school setting. Our Interactive Learning Programme focuses on:
Educational Development: Stimulating activities that keep young minds engaged and growing.
Skill Building: Helping children develop new talents and hobbies during their hospital stay.
Closing the Gap: Reducing the educational hurdles children face when they are finally ready to return to school.
At CCO, we are committed to nurturing the hope and well-being of Lesotho’s Young Warriors. We are honored to be a part of their path to recovery. Stay connected with us for vital early detection tips, survivor stories, and updates on how we are bringing hope, one child at a time.
